At TOKE, we look towards cannabis’ future while recognizing and valuing the past that got us to where we are now. We are excited to participate in the legal cannabis industry as a cannabis retail store (CRS) that is licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) to sell cannabis for recreational purposes.
One of the values of our stores is that we honour cannabis’ past while helping to build this industry’s future. We are able to pay homage to some of the “old school” strains we’re used to while gaining a new understanding of cannabis as we now have increased knowledge and availability of information about the profiles of each individual strain.
In the celebration of the cannabis we have always known and loved, here are 10 legacy strains we are happy to see in the legal cannabis market in Canada:
White Widow
White Widow is a hybrid that has the Widow’s classic aromatic profile (woodsy and piney from the terpinolene and alpha-pinene terpenes) and visual properties (dense flowers with a coating of white trichomes that give it its name). It is slightly more sativa dominant (approximately 60 per cent) and therefore known for its energizing effects. It was produced by Dutch veterans Green House Seeds in the 1990s as a cross between Brazilian indica and South Indian sativa landraces and is now bred specifically for a high trichome count.
White Widow is currently grown by 7Acres and Spinach.
Jean Guy
Jean Guy is a sativa-leaning hybrid with a rich earthy taste and notes of zesty lemon. Selected for its high THC potential and postulated to be a descendent of White Widow, Jean Guy’s frosted green buds are a mix of green hues with orange pistils and loaded with golden crystal trichomes.
Grown by Canaca; Jean Guy was bred in Nanaimo, British Columbia and locally grown in a sun-filled, high-tech greenhouse right here in Ontario. Our tribute to a Canadian classic.
Blue Dream
Showcasing its heritage of Blueberry Indica and Sativa Haze, this extra-frosted Blue Dream is sativa-leaning with a sweet and sugar-rich blueberry smell. It often has a terpene profile of Alpha-Pinene, Beta-Caryophyllene, Limonene, Myrcene, and Nerolidol. With a relatively high THC range that averages from approximately 17 to 24 per cent, this dreamy strain has more than just a great flavour to bring to the table. The CBD and CBN levels reach 2% and 1% respectively increase the entourage effects seen with multiple cannabinoids working together.
Blue Dream is currently grown by Tantalus Labs, Spinach, and CannaFarms.
Pink Kush
Pink Kush has very strong THC potency and a sweet aroma balanced with earthy notes, thanks to the myrcene, beta-caryophyllene and limonene in its terpene mix. Beneath a thick coating of trichomes, the dense and round buds feature forest green leaves, often with a purple hue, mixed with dark amber pistils. According to Wikileaf, no one is 100 per cent certain of the lineage of Pink Kush, but many believe it’s a descendant of OG Kush. Being a THC dominant indica Pink Kush generally brings feelings of relaxation alongside a euphoric headspace.
Pink Kush is currently grown by San Rafael ’71, Top Leaf, Pure Sunfarms, and CannaFarms.
Afghan Kush
This richly aromatic indica-dominant heirloom presents sweet and spicy notes of white musk and red peppercorns. Pure Sunfarms’ Afghan Kush is an indica-dominant heirloom of cultivars that originated in the Hindu Kush mountain region of Central and Southern Asia. Afghan Kush is a building block for many of the Kush varieties available today. The dried flowers are dense, sticky, and chunky – their moss-coloured leaves flecked with shades of purple under a cover of frosty trichomes. It offers aromas and flavours of white musk (myrcene), sandalwood and red peppercorns (caryophyllene), and wild mountain strawberries (linalool).
Afghan Kush is currently grown by Pure Sunfarms.
Ace Valley CBD
Flowr’s Ace Valley CBD is an indoor-grown hybrid from the Okanagan Valley in BC. It has a purple colouring with a thick layer of orange, red and blue hairs, very mild THC potency and an earthy taste with fruity undertones created by the myrcene, beta- and trans-caryophyllene, limonene and terpinene in its terpene profile.
Monkey Glue
Monkey Glue (also known fondly as “Gorilla Glue”) is an indica-dominant hybrid. According to Good Supply, “These chunky, resin-covered buds deliver pungent, earthy and sour aromas. There’s no monkeying around when it comes to this potent, sativa-dominant strain – you’ll definitely develop a bond.”
Northern Lights
Northern Lights is a descendant of indigenous Afghani Thai landrace strains and is one of the most popular indica dominant strains. It offers up a strong sweet-and-spicy aroma and generally has a terpene profile of Beta-Caryophyllene, Bisabolol, Guaiol, Limonene, and Trans-Caryophyllene. As a dominant strain, it generally elicits feelings of relaxation and calm, which often results in it being used as an evening or late-night strain.
According to Wikileaf, Northern Light’s exact lineage is unclear but it is generally believed to be a mix of two landrace building block strains – Thai and Afghani and it was originally perfected as a strain in Holland.
Northern Lights is currently grown by WeedMe.
Super Skunk
Super Skunk is a very skunky, indica-dominant strain with Afghani and Skunk number 1 in its lineage. Super Skunk is green in colour, but some people have noticed undertones of orange and brown. Buds are dense with short trichromes, the hair, outgrowths, or appendages on the plant. 18twelve’s Super Skunk delivers a profile dominated with skunky and floral flavours supported by sweet cream accents, thanks to an entourage of terpenes that include caryophyllene, myrcene, humulene, and linalool. Super Skunk is known for its relaxing feelings in the body.
Super Skunk is currently grown by Top leaf and 18twelve.
Purple Chitral
Woodstock’s Purple Chitral is an indica-dominant strain with medium THC potency and a cheese-like aroma with hints of berry as a result of its robust terpene mix includes myrcene, alpha- and beta-pinene, and guaiol.
